The History of Cannabis in Alberta: From Prohibition to a Thriving Legal Industry

Calgary's underground cannabis culture, the road to legalization, and what makes Alberta's market unique today.

Long before October 17, 2018, Alberta had a strong, quiet relationship with cannabis. From oil-patch workers in the 70s to Calgary's underground hash scene in the 90s, weed was always here — it just wasn't allowed to show its face.

When Canada became the second country in the world to fully legalize recreational cannabis, Alberta moved fastest. The province chose a private-retail model, and within a year hundreds of small dispensaries opened across Calgary, Edmonton and rural towns alike.

Today Alberta has the most cannabis stores per capita in Canada. Centre Street NW, where The Kush Spot is located, has become one of Calgary's most loved weed corridors — locals from Crescent Heights, Tuxedo Park, Highland Park and Mount Pleasant all walk in for the same reason: friendly staff, fair prices and a deep menu of Canadian-grown product.

What's next? Expect to see more craft and infused pre-rolls, higher-potency edibles as Health Canada revisits limits, and a growing focus on terpenes, minor cannabinoids and cultivar-specific experiences. Whatever comes next, The Kush Spot will be on the front line, bringing it to Calgary first.
